By Brandie Tarvin - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 1:05 AM I have been asked to find data modeling tools to serve as an alternative to Computer Associate's Erwin. I downloaded Toad version 3 to test it, but it doesn't allow me to import.er1 model diagrams.
Jan 6, 2016 - Download full-text PDF. Platinum ERwin and Oracle Designer. Currently, most. Are available for various CASE tools (e.g. CoolGen, ERwin, ERStudio) and relational. References (35).
Does anyone know of decent alternatives to Erwin which will allow me to import our current Erwin diagrams without having to rebuild them from scratch? I want a tool that will do all the same sorts of things Erwin does.
Reverse Engineering, Complete Compare, list datatypes in tables, as well as relationships, etc. Including being able to color-code tables (background and outline colors). Thanks in advance! By Steve Jones - SSC Editor - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 1:30 AM Visio will work, but it's a little flaky and that' s not it's intended purpose.
Embarkadero has ER/Studio, which I liked better than Erwin. By Grant Fritchey - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 3:55 AM Put me down for Embarcadero ERStudio too. By Brandie Tarvin - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 4:45 AM I just downloaded a trial version of this and it won't open any of my current Erwin diagrams.
It seems nothing I can find will allow me to simply convert over my current diagrams. Any other suggestions?
By Grant Fritchey - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 4:57 AM Really? That actually used to be a specialty of theirs because they were bringing so many people over from ERWin. I haven't upgraded an ERWin model myself since 2002.
What about exporting to XML or something & importing that way? By Brandie Tarvin - Thursday, January 31, 2008 1:11 AM Actually, my problem may be resolved.
I thought we weren't going to be able to get the latest version of Erwin, but now I'm hearing differently. Here's hoping! @=) By KenpoDBA - Thursday, January 31, 2008 1:20 AM Y, ERStudio is the bomb. I used to convert ERWin diagrams with it all the time. I don't imagine that they would have lost that functionality.
Almost everything in ERStudio is easier than ERWin too. By Brandie Tarvin - Thursday, January 31, 2008 1:27 AM What version are you guys using that ER/Studio converts Erwin? And what type of files have you saved in Erwin that makes the conversion so easy? When I tried to convert an.er1 diagram, it didn't work for me at all. By antonio.collins - Thursday, January 31, 2008 3:02 AM also take a look at sybase powerdesigner. By Lynn Pettis - Thursday, January 31, 2008 3:13 AM We are currently running ERStudio version 7.1.2 Build 4769, and it supports converting ERWin ERX files from version 2.6 through 3.52.
There is a newer version of ERStudio out, but we haven't done the upgrade as of yet. By Ewan Hampson - Thursday, January 31, 2008 7:29 PM Visio has always seemed OK for SQL Server, but since we also work with Oracle we have been moving towards ERWin. Do those with experience of both find that ERStudio is actually better than ERWin across database platforms, or is it simply that we all prefer the one we have got used to? By Brandie Tarvin - Friday, February 1, 2008 12:34 AM IMHO, both are better than Visio. Visio just doesn't have the toolset to do all the things I want it to do. I've only looked at ER/Studio for about 5 minutes trying to see if it would convert my ancient Erwin diagram. Since it didn't and since we may be able to upgrade our Erwin, I quit looking at it.
Getting new software approved at our company is a serious pain, so I didn't want to waste my time with something that wouldn't work. Unfortunately that means I can't tell you which tool is better.
By Grant Fritchey - Friday, February 1, 2008 12:57 AM Talking about which tool is better can be a pretty slippery slope. I've been using ERStudio for years.
I used to use ERWin and the company I'm currently at was using ERWin when I got here. I then showed them all that I could do with ERStudio out of the box and with the basic programming environment included with it. I took processes & documentation that they were spending weeks generating and turned it into a few seconds at the push of a button. Apart from the schmucks whose job it was to pile through the ERWin diagrams for hours at a time, everyone was very happy with it. Even where ERWin may be a slightly better tool, the responsiveness (or lack thereof) of CA when there are issues with the tool just doesn't compare to the support I've always received from Embarcadero. They're a great company.
I've only used ERStudio with Oracle a little bit. Mainly to migrate databases out of Oracle and into SQL Server. But it sure seemed to offer the same level of support in Oracle that it has in SQL Server. For what that's worth By Brandie Tarvin - Friday, February 1, 2008 2:10 AM Really?
Looks like ER/Studio merits a second look from me. I'm one of those poor souls whose job it is to wade through all that documentation and I just don't have the time for it. And it's nice to hear that other people have been having trouble with CA's technical support too. Thanks, Grant. By Ewan Hampson - Friday, February 1, 2008 5:05 AM My thanks to Brandie and Grant - Brandie for pointing out that there are factors that are nothing to do with the product and everything to do with who will agree to adopt/pay for it, and Grant for his experience of both. It sounds as if ERStudio would be worth examining; but with ERWin already in the door I might have a hard job getting anyone to look further (I should add that we started from a point a few months ago where neither we nor our Third Party software people had a standard ER tool). By cameron.wells - Wednesday, October 15, 2008 4:58 PM Thank guys.
I stumbled over your forum and found that I have the exact same problem as Brandie. I needed a new Data Model app that could replace Erwin. I had no idea that it would be possible to export the Erx type file from Erwin into another entity relationship tool. I've downloaded ER/Studio from Embarcadero and the pain from using Platinum ERwin 3.5.2 is now over! I'm excited people. Thanks again.
Cameron By Trent Peckham - Thursday, October 16, 2008 12:56 AM We are now using Embarcadero's ERStudio as well. Great tool and great customer service. As others have pointed out, it should do everything on your wish list. And I think it's cheaper than ERWin too By Peter Lavelle - Thursday, October 16, 2008 4:19 PM I used Sybase PowerDesigner a few years ago for this type of work. I believe it can import Erwin files and it can reverse engineer many databases.
See comparison at although this is a couple of versions out of date. By TheSQLGuru - Friday, October 17, 2008 1:34 AM If you are a SQL Server only shop, be sure to ask Embarcadero for SQL Server only licensing. This can lead to much lower costs than the full cross-platform licenses for their products. By Clay Bowen - Tuesday, June 17, 2014 6:16 AM You fail to mention the price of Embarkadero is actually higher than Erwin. I would be looking for something more cost effective.

Please post a feature matrix and current pricing for the various options you feel are more cost effective than ERStudio so we can all learn which product is best and which is the best value!! I was unable to find a price for ERWin after numerous clicks. I got right to a price list to purchase ERStudio. The Data Architect version, which I think is what the vast majority of shops will need, especially those that are cost conscious, is $1415 list with $354 for 1-year mx.
By Lempster - Tuesday, June 17, 2014 11:32 PM I concur with Grant about the lack of decent support for ERWin from CA, having experienced it myself. By Grant Fritchey - Tuesday, June 17, 2014 11:52 PM. Clay Bowen (6/17/2014) You fail to mention the price of Embarkadero is actually higher than Erwin.
I would be looking for something more cost effective. This is a six year old thread, but six years ago, the price for ERStudio was less than that of ERwin. However, I just went and did a live chat with an ERwin rep.
They told me the retail price is $4800 for one user. According to the Embarcadero web site, the Enterprise version is $7700, which is higher. But, if you only need SQL Server, it drops to $2600, which is less. There are cheaper options too.
Not sure how the price breaks down with ERwin, but overall, it looks like it might have a cheaper price point these days, depending on the options you choose. You know what? I'd still go with ERStudio because I've had a much better experience with the tool itself and much better support from the company. Initial purchase price can sway people, but long-term pain and difficulty with a product must be factored in to the cost of that product. By halil.lacevic - Friday, October 6, 2017 10:30 AM So far, I have tried many online tools.

I just downloaded a trial version of this and it won't open any of my current Erwin diagrams. It seems nothing I can find will allow me to simply convert over my current diagrams.Any other suggestions? Next version of Erwin? I wish that had been an option back in 2008. Our corporate office ended its licensing agreement with Erwin before I posted this and we aren't (and weren't) allowed to buy non-approved software.
So at the time I was looking into free options. We managed to survive in the long run.
Once I lost access to the plotter for to print out the database diagrams, people stopped asking me for them. Which is a shame. The diagrams were a quick and easy way to teach the newbies how to see our database and get the information they needed. By TheSQLGuru - Friday, October 27, 2017 2:49 AM. The diagrams were a quick and easy way to teach the newbies how to see our database and get the information they needed. Visio and ERStudio both can reverse engineer (but later versions of Visio can't IIRC) have the ability to print on 8.5X11 that you just tape together. Or you can sub-model out (in ERStudio anyway) to just include various parts that each person/group might interact with. Surely and old copy of Visio should be allowable?
By Lynn Pettis - Friday, October 27, 2017 2:54 AM Anyone remember what last Version of Visio that supported reverse engineering of databases? By Grant Fritchey - Friday, October 27, 2017 3:34 AM. Do you already have an existing database but no ER diagram or physical model? With SQLDBM, this is no problem! Use the reverse engineering feature to export your database schema as a SQL script, and then run these scripts in MSSQL Studio or SSDT (SQL Server Developer Tools) to generate the XML database-creation scripts. After that, simply upload the XML statements into SQLDBM, and then create your physical model or ERD.
Step 1, use the tool the export the database schema as a SQL Script. Step 2, run these scripts in MSSQL Studio or SSDT to generate the XML database-creation scripts. Step 3, upload the XML statements into SQLDBM. Step 4, create your physical model or ERD. Step 2 confuses me as I didn't know SSMS generated XML database-creation scripts. By Jeff Moden - Friday, October 27, 2017 9:49 AM.
Anyone remember what last Version of Visio that supported reverse engineering of databases? The 'good' one. I was actually asking what version that was so I can see if our IT group can still get it or not. Last I looked they had all sorts of older versions of many software packages.
I just need to know what to request. By Jeff Moden - Friday, October 27, 2017 10:30 AM In all seriousness, I found a hack on SO and I'm in the process of reverse engineering a 2016 Enterprise database using Visio 2010 Pro. I'll let you know how it goes when it finishes. By Jeff Moden - Friday, October 27, 2017 10:47 AM It's done and it worked just fine. I reverse engineered all the tables in a 1,391 table, 1.3TB database in 327 seconds with no display turned on, added a table to the display, told it to find all related tables and it all operated as expected. I went to the home menu and told it to align and distribute and it all worked just fine. I used the Generic OleDB Driver but you can download the latest but I've not tried that yet.
The key is and always has been that 'DATABASE' won't show up on the menu unless you open visio with the correct template, which may be found under 'Software and Database' when you are on the 'NEW' selection under the 'FILE' tab and select 'Database Model Diagram' under that.
